ASL Genius Hour 1.2

Hey guys ! This week I learned greetings and questions in American Sign Language. I learned five phrases that I felt I would be using immediately. The first word I learned was quite simple, hello. It is one motion, using one hand, so it was very easy to learn. The word hey is also super simple and I learned that one after hello. What's up ?  uses two hands and I had a harder time getting the hand placement correct. Hey, hello, and what's up are all I've mastered for greetings right now.

The next thing I moved into learning was basic questions and their answers. What is your name is the first question I learned to ask. An important thing to remember when asking questions in ASL is that the question word goes at the end of the sentence. Your name is what is actually how it is said in ASL. After learning the question I learned how to say my name is. This question and answer was very easy to learn. The last question I learned was your favorite movie is what. Like most questions this involves using two hands to sign it.

Overall this portion was fun to learn, but I will need to continue practicing these as I move forward. I'm glad I'm enjoying the basic words and phrases this much, because it makes me look forward to larger phrases and words. Next week I'm learning twenty vocab words. Wish me luck !

  1. I think that ASL is really cool and I would love to learn it as well. Is it hard to keep track of the way the questions are worded? That would be difficult for me. I was also wondering if the hand signals are difficult to keep track of? Or does it become a second nature?

  2. Sounds like this project is going really good! I’m curious as to why the question word comes at the end of the phrase? I think each phrase so far has been very applicable to any situation. Lastly, are actions more complex than nouns?
