1.6 G.H. ASL

Hey guys! Welcome back to the blog! I haven't been following my initial outline very closely, I thought why not shake things up again and take his week to learn about the ASL culture! I read a couple articles that really gave me some insightful knowledge. The first article I read was from Minnesota Hands and Voices. The article talked about the deaf community and the benefits of being involved in it. Being involved helps improve one's self esteem, gain fellowship and respect the use of sign language.

The second article I pretty much covered the same topics as the first one. It talked a bit more about how to properly identify a deaf person. The appropriate terms are "hard of hearing" or "deaf". Offensive terms toward a deaf person is "disabled" or "hearing impaired" are offensive. I also watched a video on negation in ASL. To make a sentence negative the most efficient technique is to shake your head.

All in all this week went pretty well and added to my learning process of ASL. I put visual down below that shows other negative words that can be used for negation in ASL.

Thanks for taking the time to read my blog !

  1. Great job so far! I can't imagine this is easy to learn. Is this form of sign language universal across different languages? Like if you went down to Mexico or over to Germany, could you communicate with a mute person or does it only translate from the English Language?

  2. Jentry, I have enjoyed seeing your journey the past few weeks! You have put so much work into this and I am proud of you! When I have been watching you I can't help but think of how hard it is and how much there is to remember! When you become a speech pathologist is this going to help you significantly? I can't wait to see more of your progress!

  3. Good job Jentry! I know someone who is deaf and communication is somewhat difficult. Don't forget to always keep going even if you get frustrated. I can't wait to see how much you have learned at the end of this Genius Hour!

  4. Great job Jentry! I also found it very important to learn about the culture of the deaf community. I think the more aware we are the better we can understand people.

  5. Keep up that hard work Jentry! I can tell that you are learning so much from this experience. What is the hardest thing about learning sign language? What resources are you using? Keep it up!

  6. This project is very interesting Jentry! I've seen people debate on whether sign language should be taught instead of cursive, what are your thoughts? Keep up the good work!
